Lab Manager and Research Assistant (id:47978)
**Purpose**:
The Townsend Lab is accepting applications for a Lab Manager and Research Assistant to join our engaging and active research team beginning Summer 2018. The Townsend Lab combines mouse-models (transgenics, metabolic physiology), _in vitro_ cell culture work, neurobiology and molecular biology in order to investigate how the brain regulates energy balance, communicates with peripheral metabolic organs, and undergoes adult neural plasticity. This is a full-time, fiscal year position. Initial appointment is for 12 months, and continuation of the position will be contingent on external funding and successful job performance. Salary for this position is between $45,000 - $52,000 commensurate with experience.
**Essential Duties & Responsibilities**:
* Manages lab and oversees basic lab functions
* Assists with research directed toward current and future research within the Townsend Lab
* Prepares reports for external and internal project reviews.
* Trains, instructs and supervises undergraduate students, graduate students.
* Works effectively and cooperatively with members of the School of Biology and Ecology, University of Maine administration, the campus community, and external clients and customers.
* Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
**Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications**:
* Bachelor's in a relevant biomedical field leadership, mentoring and supervisory experience in a laboratory setting
* Strong passion for and interest in biomedical research
* Laboratory experience in molecular and cell biology; biomedical focus (no less than 1 year)
* Excellent professionalism and interpersonal skills
* Experience with mouse husbandry, mating, genotyping, metabolic physiology
* Experience with immunostaining, microscopy, qPCR
* Excellent record keeping, organization, data integrity, and data management skills
* Commitment to responsible conduct of research, research ethics and integrity
* Strong interest and experience in working with graduate and undergraduate students on research projects
* Strong communication skills (verbal, written); ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary team
* Ability to troubleshoot, optimize protocols, read and analyze scientific literature
* Self-driven to execute projects in the laboratory; maintenance of flexibility and creativity in a dynamic environment
**Preferred:**
* Master's degree
* Experience with bioinformatics, biostatistics
* Publication history (co-authored, peer-reviewed)
* Experience in obesity, diabetes, neuroscience
**Supervisory Responsibilities**: Supervising of undergraduate interns and graduate students in study tours, report/paper translations, preparation of training materials, and other MFP related activities.
**Position Type**: This is a full-time, fiscal year position. Initial appointment is for 12 months, and continuation of the position will be contingent on external funding and successful job performance.
**Work Schedule**: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Work beyond regular hours (to include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position. In consultation with the supervisor, the employee will establish regular office hours and adjust schedule as necessary. Can be variable with long hours during the study tours.
**Work Environment**: Varies from office to regional and international travel.
**Schedule for Evaluation**: In the initial nine months of employment and annually thereafter, in accordance with the UMPSA agreement
